The French painter Jean-Honoré Fragonard was most famous for his wash drawings. Fragonard, who died in 1806, opted out of frequently exhibiting in the established Parisian Rococo salon, and instead chose to work for private clients making lighthearted or erotic images. Fragonard shows his tongue-in-cheek sense of humor by juxtaposing a woman who is bemoaning her lover’s infidelity, with the loyalty of her dog, a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, in the drawing entitled, “Oh! If Only He Were as Faithful to Me.”
